Research

VSI, in collaboration with the Bixby Center for Population, Health and Sustainability at the University of California, Berkeley and local partner organizations, conducts operations research projects to demonstrate that misoprostol can be distributed to pregnant mothers through antenatal care providers at primary health care facilities and by providers closest to women for postabortion care. To date, VSI and partners have disseminated the results of these projects to governments and stakeholders in eight countries, and are currently implementing a research project in Ghana. Taken together, our research projects have enrolled over 150,000 women.

VSI believes strongly that we cannot stop at the initial pilot programs that only benefit the few and endeavors to bring programs countrywide. VSI engages policymakers and ministries of health from the beginning with the aim that our research will influence policy decisions related to level of access to misoprostol and wide-scale adoption of effective, evidenced-based programs for safe motherhood.
