Leading African doctors convene to plan for introduction of misoprostol for postabortion care
(ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA) - Today closed out two days of meetings among leading gynecologists, researchers and policymakers on the introduction of misoprostol for postabortion care in low-resource settings across Africa. The US-based nongovernmental organization Venture Strategies Innovations (VSI) hosted the regional meeting at the Kaleb Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on October 4-5 for 40 colleagues representing eight African countries. The program entailed discussion of the situation of postabortion care in each country, including service provision, legal and political frameworks, and the development of a plan for adoption of the forthcoming Misoprostol for Postabortion Care Service Delivery Toolkit.
A collaborative project of VSI and Ipas, the toolkit is designed to assist program planners, policymakers and clinicians in standardizing the integration or introduction of medication-based postabortion care services across the heath care system. By introducing the toolkit and misoprostol for this life-saving indication, the partners aim for access to postabortion services to be greatly expanded. The final toolkit is slated for release by VSI and Ipas in early 2011.
