Malawi registers misoprostol for life-saving obstetrical use
(LILONGWE, MALAWI) The Pharmacy, Medicines, and Poisons Board of Malawi has taken the crucial policy step of approving the registration of misoprostol tablets for use in obstetrics, including for the prevention and treatment of excessive bleeding after childbirth, or postpartum hemorrhage, and the treatment of incomplete abortion and miscarriage. In a country where a woman has a 1 in 18 lifetime risk of dying of complications of pregnancy or childbirth, affordable and easy-to-use misoprostol tablets have an important role to play in improving women’s access to life-saving care.
Malawi is the 11th country in Africa to register misoprostol for use in maternal health. VSI and local governmental and nongovernmental partners will continue efforts to make misoprostol tablets available to the women who need them most for safe delivery and treatment of complications of abortion.
